South Korean fencing has won the overall title at the Asian Championships for the first time in two years.
On the final day of the 2024 Asian Championships in Kuwait City, Kuwait, on Sunday (July 27), South Korea won a silver medal in the men’s fleuré and a bronze medal in the women’s sabre.
With four gold, two silver and five bronze medals, South Korea finished first overall. China (3 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze) and Japan (3 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze) followed.
Last year, South Korea finished second overall behind Japan (gold-4-silver-1-bronze-4) with three gold, five silver and four bronze medals, falling short of its goal of winning its 13th consecutive overall title, but returning to the top spot in Asia for the second year in a row.
In the individual events, Oh Sang-wook (Daejeon Metropolitan City Hall) in men’s sabre and Hong Se-na (Ansan City Hall) in women’s foil won gold, while the men’s sabre and women’s épée teams won their fourth consecutive team gold medals as they aim to win the team event at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in a month’s time.
The day also saw Ha Tae-gyu (Chungnam Sports Federation), Lee Kwang-hyun, Yoon Jung-hyun and Lim Chul-woo (Sang Hwaseong City Hall) win their third consecutive silver medal in the men’s fleuré.
After defeating Singapore 45-36 in the quarterfinals, the men’s fleur de lis team bounced back with a 45-41 win over Japan, the current world No. 1 team, in the semifinals before falling to China 36-45 in the final.
The women’s sabre team was unable to defend its title, but Yoon Ji-su and Jeon Ha-young (Seoul Metropolitan Government), Choi Se-bin (Jeonnam-do) and Jeon Eun-hye (Incheon Jung-gu Office) teamed up to win bronze.
The women’s sabre team edged out Uzbekistan 45-43 in the quarterfinals before falling 36-45 to reigning champion Kazakhstan in the semifinals, but defeated Japan 45-37 in the bronze medal match. 카지노사이트
