Achieved personal best performance at third Olympics, but failed to win medal

South Korean male weightlifter Yoo Dong-ju achieved his personal best performance in his third Olympics, but failed to win a medal.

Yoo Dong-ju lifted a total of 371 kg (168 kg in the snatch and 203 kg in the clean and jerk) in the men’s 89 kg class at the 2024 Paris Olympics held at South Paris Arena 6 in Paris, France on the 9th (local time), placing 6th out of 12 competitors. Yoo

failed to lift 163 kg in the first attempt at the snatch, but succeeded in the second attempt.

In the third attempt, he successfully increased the weight to 168 kg and roared.

In the clean and jerk, he lifted 203 kg in the first attempt, and attempted 211 kg in the second attempt, but missed because the barbell went backwards.

In the final third attempt, he increased the weight to 217 kg and challenged for a medal, but failed.

The Paris Games will be Yoo Dong-ju’s third individual Olympic stage. He finished 14th (total 340 kg) in the 85 kg class at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and 8th (360 kg) in the 96 kg class at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In the 2024 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup men’s 89 kg class held in Phuket, Thailand in April, he lifted 166 kg in the snatch, 209 kg in the clean and jerk, and a total of 375 kg to place 5th. However, Yoo Dong-ju, who showed rapid growth ahead of the Paris Olympics, had to be satisfied with his personal best performance. The gold medal went to Carlos Nasar (Bulgaria) with a total of 404 kg (snatch 180 kg, clean and jerk 224 kg). This is an Olympic record and a new world record, proving that he is the best in this event.
