Thailand’s Casino Resort May Bring 50,000 Jobs

Thailand’s labor minister, Pipat Ratchakit Prakhan, suggested on Thursday that at least 50,000 jobs could be created if Thailand agreed to build five casino resorts each in separate regions, citing the Bangkok Post newspaper.

“Legalisation activities such as gambling in casinos will generate more profits for the economy,” Mr Pippot was quoted as saying.

Thailand’s parliament’s lower house is set to consider legislation to legalise casino businesses on March 28, according to a report by The Nation newspaper on Tuesday, citing comments by Deputy Finance Minister Zulapun Amonvivat.

The labor minister noted that employment and income checks are needed to ensure that domestic customers at Thai casinos can afford to gamble.

Thailand could earn at least 50 billion THB (US$1.37 billion) a year if it legalizes casinos, the Nation cited a Thai scholar on Thursday.

Dr. Tanawat Phonwichai, president of the Thai College of Commerce, said these amounts can generate tax revenue and help the country develop.

Although he added that any country with a casino industry would need protection against the risks of fraud and corruption. It would also need protection against such things as a risk from problematic gambling.
